still dreaming about Alys Beach

After Digital Graffiti I can't stop thinking about the fabulous architecture (and interiors in some cases) that is Alys Beach. Their real estate link is my new favorite online destination. A girl can dream...
i can just imagine the parties i would throw here
and how wonderful that this is the view from the master bedroom as i've never been one to be ready before my guests arrive ;)

it is hot

Even though i have never claimed to even pretend to think it's OK for the weather to be this HOT, i must say..i am enjoying this summer. It's nice not to have a schedule. Our only place we have to be is swim lessons. MJ wrapped up hers last week and Molly is finishing hers up this week. It's so nice to not worry (as much) about the girls in the water, especially since jumping in to save them will be much harder with a baby in my hands.

Mary James swim class - Duster's Dolphins

Also this summer... a picture frame show in Savannah! We're working hard on getting our frames going and are really excited about some of the wood we found this time around! Look for more information on the frame show soon!! And please let me know if you live in the Savannah area, we'll add you to invitation list (although ALL of you are invited anyway, it's just fun to get an invitation in the mail sometimes!) Here is a sneak peak of our new frames...

Liam's, this weekend!

Tomorrow night we are headed (a little farther south) to adorable Thomasville to dine at acclaimed downtown restaurant, Liam's.

Not only is their location to die for, but they serve only sustainably-sourced, natural, organic foods AND they are art lovers with all of the pieces displayed within for sale... this could be dangerous.

They've received rave reviews from the press as well as peers, I can't wait to form an opinion of my own!

sheet to wedding dress...

so, i know Joanna already posted about this but I have been saving it for once my Rebecca Wood interview went up so i'm putting it out there anyway (this was inspiration to really stop hoarding posts ;) ). in the event there is someone out there who reads stewart & james who does not already read a cup of jo (and i realize the unlikeliness of this since i am pretty sure she has the biggest blog there is) then it will still be news to them. it did make me feel pretty cool (because i'm a dork like that) to have the same post idea as sweet Joanna though...

in case it wouldn't be cool enough just to work with r.wood studios, how much coolER would it be to collaborate with your wildly innovative contemporaries on your wedding dress?! read how one girl did exactly that here

r. wood

i did this interview months ago and kept thinking i would get pictures of pieces kristen and i have to add before i publsihed it. apparently that's never going to happen and i am tired of waiting to share such an exciting post with you guys soooo...

even though i went to school in athens, georgia, i didn't hear of r. wood studio ceramics until after i'd moved from the lovely town she calls home.

the first piece of hers i acquired set me into quite a frenzy. it was - and still is for that matter - a small, flat, round dish of sorts that was given to me as a soap dish (i know this because it was accompanied by a bar of soap). it was lovely in all of its ways but its color is what really got me going. it is the most divine shade of orange. it has just the right amount of yellow in it but with an unexpected strawberry pink undertone that softens it up a bit. it makes me consider painting my dining room orange upon nearly every glance. but the knowledge that NO paint color would actually match the beloved soapdish reigns me back in time after time. until i can get the actual Rebecca Wood to start making house calls my dining room will remain brown.

the wildly creative woman behind all of this beauty and creativity agreed to an interview (of sorts) about her work, her life, what gets her going and what she's currently digging.

without further adieu, Rebecca Wood:

How and when did you discover your talent and passion?
I’ve always had an active imagination, and plenty of time to myself to dream.

Are you formally trained or self taught or both?
Both. I got a b.f.a. in drawing and painting from the university of Georgia, and have taken classes in lots of stuff.

How old is R.Wood Studios?
18 years.

What inspires your work?
nature and southern textures and colors

What inspires you?
Anything simple.joyful and beautiful.

What is your workspace like?
I just bought 13 acres of old homestead out I the country, and there’s an old wooden building with a tin roof that is about to become my drawing and painting studio.

What are some of your favorite colors to work with right now?
Sky blues and orange reds.

Your colors are always so vivid, how are you inspired to create such colors?
Always nature. You can’t beat nature for color schemes.

Do you prefer to make certain pieces over others?
I like to make platters and vases cause they look so good teamed up with food and flowers.

Please describe a day in the studio for you.
I have the dreamy job of doing whatever inspires me. some days that means taking a beauty walk and taking pictures for our blog – beautyeveryday.com. it could also be making pots for the woodfire, painting plates, combing a flea market for ideas, or brainstorming about ways to inspire people to use their own creativity and create some beauty.

How would you describe your personal style (this can be your house, your clothes, anything that defines you)?
My clothing style is ‘bohemian gangster’.

House- wise, the more rustic the better. Ideally, one table, one chair, one bowl, and some chopsticks.

What are some of your favorite things?
Daffodils, old southern textures and decay, anything primitive. Cute fabrics, birds, homemade marinara from our garden.

What's best about living in Athens?
Plenty of creative energy. easy to get around, and you can drive 10 minutes and be out in the rolling country with cows and pastures and sky.

In what other ways are you creative and artistic?
I love to sew one of a kind outfits, put up homemade jam, make homemade wine, cook, garden, pull weeds, read old recipe books, make flower arrangements, take beauty pics, do healing work, and play my singing bowls and didgeridoo.

What advice can you offer to aspiring artists and/or small business owners?
My motto is ‘intuit and do it’. I always follow my intuition, and don’t hesitate to buy books or things that inspire me.

Thank you so much, Rebecca, for granting us a peek into your dreamy world!

xx

oh! and one more thing - they are having a marvelous sale through the end of the month!!

daddy's day early

Lucky for Jim, Mary James has been on a really big kick about Father's Day. I mentioned it a week or so ago, thinking about making an album (that we always do for his Father's Day gift) and ever since then all she can talk about is "Father Day". So, to kick things off...she decided they needed to make him something. And make they did....

After all was done and this beautiful dinner was made.... Jim walked in and the girls jumped all over him about their surprise, spitting out it's details before he can even get to the kitchen. And he lovingly made an enormous deal over how pretty it was and how good it looked. And Mary James just sat there for a minute and said..but you have to EAT it. HAAA. I said, yeah Daddy....the whole thing, they spent a lot of time on it. With no other option, he took a bite and said it was actually pretty good. I must say, MJ picked ingredients that kind of fit together. I can't wait to see what's in store for the real day!

digital grafitti

Last weekend we went to Alys Beach for this year's Digital Graffiti exhibit (you might have read e's post about it last week). Not only was the artwork fabulous but many of the vacant homes were open to the public ...er, people paying to attend the event... and they were a sight themselves!

My camera (and its operator...) sucks so the images aren't much to look at. Hopefully, they at least convey the feel of the event. It was the epitome of cool. If you ever have the opportunity to attend something like this, don't miss out.

not that this would be much for comfort but my, what something to look at!

i've always had a soft spot for gated entrances (to the front of a home).

i *HEART* this look so much that i am seriously considering making my driveway, which really does have to be replaced, look like it.

this image totally reminds me of Courtney's Screen on the Green party from last Spring and how desperately i still want to have one of my own - local friends, exactly how afraid of my 'hood are you??
